Northeast Vietnam Motorbiking Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Mau Son. ~180 km, ~5 h.
Drive from Hanoi to Mau Son on the beautiful newly sealed road with a stop for lunch in Lang Son. Mau Son is 30 km away from Lang Son, 1.541m above sea level. Quite cool in the evening! Night in the guesthouse of Mau Son Resort. The temperature is cooler than in the low lands but many people find it very wet and humid in winter. The accommodation condition is also very basic so if you prefer a more comfortable place for the night we will stay in Lang Son city.
Day 2: Mau Son – Quang Uyen. ~180 km, ~6 h.
In fact, the road is a bit bumpy and dusty between Dong Khe and That Khe. In reality, it takes us 6 hours to reach a beautiful village in Quang Uyen. This village is in the middle of a mountain cirque. Here is the territory of Nung An people. For the night, we stay in our friend’s host house.
Day 3: Quang Uyen (options). ~100 km, ~2 h (~30 km, ~1 h).
Option 1
Having obtained permission from the border police then we make our way through spectacular scenery to Vietnam’s most impressive waterfalls – Ban Gioc. Weather permitting we can swim right up to where the 50 m high falls hit the river.
Option 2
Na Tau is a completely unknown area that we propose to discover it by raft and motorbike. Rivers and waterfalls are extremely beautiful and wild. In addition, it is only 15 km from Quang Uyen.
Day 4: Quang Uyen – Ba Be. ~170 km, ~8 h.
Beautiful drive from Cao Bang province to Ba Be. Few passes from where you can dominate the area. The road is easy, however, there are many curves. While riding, we can stop a lot to take photos. Altogether, stop for drinks and food it should be an 8-hour journey. Finally, we spend the night in the house of a Tay host family in Pac Ngoi village.
Day 5: Ba Be – Bac Kan. ~50 km, ~2 h.
Easy boating on the lake and river. Then go to the market (if it is the day you arrive). Stop at a waterfall, beautiful swim, etc. Down the waterfall, we could visit the village and a small school (only a few pupils during the summer). Finally, a short ride from Ba Be to Bac Kan on easy roads. Bac Kan is a small town where we have a night in a nice hotel.
Day 6: Bac Kan – Hanoi. ~180 km, ~7 h. End of Northeast Vietnam.
Quite a long drive but easy (early departure is better) from Bac Kan to Hanoi. The last part from Thai Nguyen to Hanoi is busy and scary, in fact, one of the busiest highways in Vietnam. Arrive in Hanoi around 4 pm.
